“First Nations Fire" services in Canada or woefully underfunded. If you live on a reserve in Canada you are 11 times more likely to die in a fire. Federally a non native departments receives about 106 dollars per person per year while native departments receive about 35. They lack adequate help for PTSD. They often fight fire with old and antiquated gear in some cases without gear at all. Many departments lack the equipment neccessary to clean the cancer causing carcinogenes that are present in every fire.

 

Canadians draw a large part of their national identity from a pride in knowing that we are a country that accepts and respects other cultures and peoples as our own. The way the federal government treats aboriginal peoples in this country stands in starck contrast to this belief.
